When you get up close you see that's not ink, charcoal, or paint, those are WOOL FIBERS poked through the paper! An extra layer of mystery.

Peeling a #wooldrawing off its backing foam piece (where the fibers are temporarily anchored). You can see the half the sticks out the back. No, they don't fall out, but they can be tugged out. It's like a pencil drawing: you could erase the pencil lines with effort... if you wanted to. So... don't. Framing these ideally uses a deeper frame, involving matting and spacers to lift the paper to account for the back-projecting fibers, and to hold the glass away from the front fibers. Some collectors have even had a window built into the back of the frame so they can take it off the wall and show the backside!

This little wool drawing sold quickly- finished it last week, posted it in my online store, included it in my email blast and a subscriber snapped it up immediately. Besides my 'big' projects or ongoing series, I also often also work on small things like this: trying to elegantly capture an animal in a simple study. Small ones still take time and skill but they are more accessible in terms of price (this one was $175) and space (matted, this one is 14 x 11) than my larger ones. Finished with another 'Object of Intrigue' wool drawing; not sure what to call this one yet. Naming them is always tricky. The inspiration for each piece is a little different and I don't really like to steer the viewer's experience too much through a name. Suggestions? (Which I may thoroughly ignore 😊)

Here's my process for creating a #wooldrawing , from start to finish: making a full-sized pencil drawing, transferring the outlines to my thick printmaking paper (laid over a foam sheet) by poking with a pin, then gradually adding wool to define edges and relative values. The addition of black fiber (alpaca fiber) after the tan (shetland wool fiber) is done really gives it extra depth and dimension. Then I have to peel it off the foam work surface (carefully!) and you can see how the fibers project out through the back! This is a FLAT piece of paper that I've 'drawn' on by poking brown and black wool through the surface. What's it supposed to be? Something intriguing. A close-up tour of 'Holdfast', from my 'Objects of Intrigue' #wooldrawing series I've just begun. The three-dimensional effect I can get simply by laying fiber over paper and poking it through is pretty incredible.
