This is the cap of my Clay printed mushroom. The star is “woven” into the surface using a grasshopper script, it is structural— during printing it helps the outer wall from collapsing and once fired the inside hole will sit over the cylinder protruding from the separately printed stem. The hole is also used to wire an LED light through. I will do a bisc firing at cone 05 and then glaze fire at cone 5.

If you scroll back in my grid I printed a stem a few weeks ago, and have a few finished mushrooms which I will post soon too.

A sneak peek into my 3D clay printing ritual. I usually roll a base slab by hand on a thin piece of fabric (a cut up bedsheet is my go to). I start printing the first layer and if the the slab needs to be moved a bit- as it did in this print, I’ll cancel the print, move the slab- which is easy to do by sliding the fabric, and restart the print. I babysit first 30-60 minutes of the print and slow down the potterbot to 20% speed after the first couple of layers so that I can carefully cut the excess clay while it’s printing.

This is my blob series. I use grasshopper- a visual programming language to code a script within rhino that packs a rectangular box with 3 different sized spheres at random points. I then make a mesh from the shell and slice off the top and bottom for printing.

My largest mushroom cap to date, 10 hour print time using 2 tubes of clay. You can see the transition at the 3 hour mark between the first and second tube, where I need to pause the print at the exact moment during the second to last gill layer to hide the transition as much as possible. This is the stem of my Clay printed mushroom—the star pattern on the inside is structural— during printing it helps the outer wall and the top cylinder sits inside of the hole of my clay printed mushroom cap and the increased surface area of the top gives more areas to bond to the star on the bottom of the cap. It also helps increase the weight of the bottom part of the mushroom, which gives it a lower center of gravity and makes it less “tippy” without making the base too chunky. The hole is also used to wire an LED light through. The star is “woven” into the surface using a grasshopper script and the seam is from the transition between structure and surface facade.

See my last reel where I printed the mushroom cap and I also show the finished piece in the end because a lot of people commented that they didn’t think the work would survive firing. I bisc to 05, spray glaze, and then fire to cone 5.

This is the cap of my clay printed mushroom. The very first layer is the hardest. I print the clay on a piece of a cut up bedsheet stretched over Sheetrock to allow the clay to shrink as it dries without cracking. I wet it to help the first layer adhere, but it also needs a lot of my help because it wants to peel up as the nozzle makes the tight turns for the interior structural “gills” woven into the surface. I created the gills and the gcode using a grasshopper script.

Showing the parametric design process for 3d printed clay. I start with a curve which becomes a form, and then I apply a surface texture using an algorithm often used in animation to simulate flowing water. The printing process is very finicky in the beginning and I do a lot of “co-botting” where I’m trimming and smoothing the base layers as the potterbot is printing on a super slow speed.

The printing process is very finicky. I am in the R&D phase for a new form which means I do a lot of “co-botting” where I’m monitoring the print to see where the problems arise and adjusting the file to make the next print more likely to succeed.

I knew this one was likely going to collapse. I was trying to speed the print up too much. I should have known better…Slow and steady wins the race when it comes to 3D printing clay. I’ll try it again tomorrow….
