'Boxy,' one of my touchable sculptures from the 2020 exhibition InTouch at the de Saisset Museum in Santa Clara. I built this form over styrofoam cubes and needle felted wool into them to create the overall shape. This one really emphasizes angles but still in an organic way.

This piece ended up being the heaviest of the Hanging Pod sculptures, at 40 lbs. It required a lot of industrial felt for the stitched form underneath the white wool (and that weight adds up) and I filled it with expanding spray foam from the hardware store in certain areas to support the inset areas, and filled the rest with recycled foam rubber. A steel cable anchored deep inside the sculpture comes out the top, and I later covered that with a wet-felted 'sleeve' so it would match and appear organic. Each of the twelve forms I created demanded slightly different approaches-- dictated by the forms I wanted to achieve as well as how I wanted them to feels, since I can vary the 'squish' by the materials used underneath as well as the amount of density created while needle felting-- packing more wool into the same area makes it more dense, and that's how I get clean lines and ridges too. Guess what I used inside this one, under all that white felt? This Hanging Pod, 'Planar', proved uniquely challenging- because in order to scale up my work (and not be poking at wool for the rest of my life) I turned to using armature materials underneath an outer coating of felted wool. And I wanted this one to be rigid and angular and concave in parts. So I stitched industrial felt pieces together, but if I had stuffed the cavity with fiberfill or foam rubber scraps it would have all pushed outwards and changed the intended shape. So I used expanding spray foam from the hardware store-- the kind used to fill gaps and cracks-- and slowly built up layers inside. It filled the space as it was, and still allowed me to poke the outer wool fibers into the industrial felt layer. But it was tricky, since it was so firm, so I often had to use a single needle instead of several. But the problem-solving is the part I really love about creating new things and using weird materials to do it.
